Chile, a Food Powerhouse
Chile has comparative and competitive advantages that allow it to produce food whose quality stands out from its competitors. Within the comparative advantages the following may be included: the geographic isolation of the country (the desert in the north, the Pacific Ocean, the Andes mountains and the Patagonian ice) makes it an island from the point of view of health, decreasing the incidence of pests and diseases, the Mediterranean climate is beneficial for obtaining optimal raw material and production, and it is in a counter-season and phased production.
The quality of the food supply produced in Chile has achieved remarkable recognition according to the latest Global Food Security Index 2013, prepared by The Economist Intelligence Unit, which placed the country as the leader in Latin America.
The strategy of “Chile Food Powerhouse” focuses on productivity achieved through innovation and incorporation of technology, sustainable use of natural resources, production chains ranging from small farmers to modern agribusinesses; deepening competitive positioning in international markets, concern for plant and animal health, food safety, and alignment of public and private sector with the food agenda.
In recent years, Chile has emerged as one of the most important stakeholders in the food industry worldwide, hoping to be among the top 10 exporters in this sector by 2020 (currently 16th) and also to establishing itself as one of the few countries in the world where food sector has a high share of GDP, more than 10%, after New Zealand and Belgium.

Dry and Dehydrated Fruits
Chile has geographic conditions that allow producing high quality products, for example, the good weather of Chile, with generally dry autumns, appropriate for harvest and flat lands, which allow mechanizing part of the productive process and easing the irrigation use of the land. Additionally, the sector relatively faces less plant protection problems due to the geographic characteristics of the country. Also, the Chilean dry fruits have superior organoleptic characteristics, which allow them to reach high quality markets niches.
- Chile reached the first place in the global ranking of exporting countries of dehydrated apple with a total volume of 6300 tons.
- Chile reached the second place in export of walnuts without shell, and the sixth place in productions with 42,500 tons. It is expected that the country doubles its production and the exportation reach US$ 500 millions in the next years.
- Chile is the second biggest producer in the world of dehydrated plums, close to 90 thousand tons in a regular year.
- Chile is the second biggest exporter of hazelnut and the third exporter of raisins, due to the high quality of the processed products.

Halal Products
Chilean entrepreneurs have a history of working under the Halal certification since the 1970’s. This certification came up as a support on the needs of the exporting companies to be able to reach countries with Muslim population, considering the market opening of the country. Nowadays, there are close to 50 certified companies, most of them from the agricultural sector, sea products and aquaculture. It has also been observed the participation of the livestock sector companies with meat and dairy products. There is potential to include companies from the cosmetics and personal care products sector, pharmaceutical sector and services, such as tourism.
Almost every national company with Halal certification is exporting or they have a view to export shortly to markets with Muslim population. Many of these companies have exported to countries with Muslim population majority in the north of Africa (Morocco, Egypt), Middle East (United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan), South-East Asia (Indonesia and Malaysia), as well as for the consumption of minorities in Europe and United States.
