WATER

Geographic, morphological, climatic and tectonic factors have given rise to many sources of mineral water in Chile.

Seven types of water are sold in Chile: purified, filtered, potable, distilled, rainwater, flavoured and mineral. Mineral water is divided into two types: Thermal and nonthermal.

The history of water in Chile dates back to 1920, when a supreme decree was issued stating that Cachantún (now one of Chile’s best-known brands) was a source of water with curative powers. It went on to become the first water to be bottled on a large scale in Chile.

Mineral water can only be bottled at its natural source of origin, which must be officially recognized and it must meet the bacteriological requirements for potable water.

Main types:

  • Purified
  • Filtered
  • Potable
  • Distilled
  • Rainwater
  • Flavoured
  • Mineral: thermal and nonthermal.

In 2016, mineral and sparkling water exports exceeded US$2.5 million.p>

The main export markets for Chilean water are Spain, Mexico, the United States, China, the United Arab Emiriates and Australia.

International markets, such as Asia, Russia and the Middle East, offer great opportunities for premium waters bottled in Chile.
