Chilean sustainability and organic food
Chile’s organic production has developed under a regulatory framework since 2006. The Agricultural and Livestock Service is the entity responsible for organic certification. Chile supplies the world with organic products prepared using holistic agricultural, fishing or forestry management systems that foster and improve the health of the agroecosystem and biodiversity, the biological cycles and the biological activity of the soil.
In 2016 the European Union and Chile signed a bilateral equivalence agreement on organic products. This agreement is based on the EU and Chile mutually recognizing the equivalence of their organic production rules and control systems. The EU proposes gradually eliminating the current import system based on certification provided by control organisms or certifying companies recognized by the EU.
This agreement is currently being reviewed by the Special Committee on Agriculture that advises the Council of the EU on resolutions and agreements. At its session of 16 January, it studied the Organic Equivalence Agreement with Chile and sent it to the council with the recommendation “A”, that is immediate approval. It is hoped that the Council will review it on 6 March and approved it without amendment, ready for signing.

Foods from Chile, Source of Life
Chile’s geography, climate and people give it a unique character and provide it with incomparable conditions for producing food whose quality and attributes are appreciated around the world.
Chile has the most transparent skies on Earth and possesses some of the world’s most significant freshwater reserves. Natural barriers at all four compass points protect Chile, converting it into a true phytosanitary island, thereby reducing the incidence of pests and diseases.
As it is such a long, thin country, Chile has an unusually varied range of climate types. One that particularly stands out is the Mediterranean climate, which has enabled Chile to become a major food producer.
