MEAT: POULTRY, BEEF, LAMB AND PORK

Chile's poultry industry has evolved over the last 20 years, both in terms of the range of products on offer and in the way it has penetrated the global market. It has been bold and entrepreneurial, positioning itself among the ten main exporters worldwide with food products that are healthy, safe and of high quality.

The poultry industry has always sought to guarantee the quality of its products to domestic and international consumers and to increase its competitiveness, by incorporating official programmes implemented by the Agricultural and Livestock Service (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero, SAG). The industry also applies self-control programmes that each country implements in the areas of animal welfare, environment and corporate social responsibility.

Chilean beef comes from animals born and raised in the protected environment of Chile, in the tranquillity of natural grazing land with good-quality grass and crystal-clear water and optimum health. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Chile is free from most of the reportable diseases which affect livestock around the world, including Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

The abattoir and processing industry uses international state-of-the-art technology to provide meat products of the highest quality and food safety to the domestic and international markets. Production is mainly geared to the domestic market and there are over 120,000 producers.

Our sheep graze on natural pastureland in the southernmost part of Chile. Sheep are easy to rear and generate several products, such as lamb and wool. Lamb contains energy, high-quality protein and minerals and vitamins that are important to the human diet.

Pork is the second most-produced type of meat in Chile, after poultry. It is also the most exported, representing 60% of Chile’s meat production.

The industry has invested heavily in technology to improve the efficiency of its processes and thus adjust to meet the needs of consumers and comply with legislation worldwide. It has also worked hard to produce in an environmentally sustainable manner.

In order to provide a quality food product, the industry has an integrated food safety management system. Chilean pork is therefore produced to the highest standards of health and food safety.
