Chilean Wine: Natural, Healthy and Organic
Chile produces world-class wine thanks to the country’s exceptional geographical conditions. Nearly 1,200 kilometers of wine valleys from North to South, that benefit from a Mediterranean climate and vast soil diversity. Chile’s geographical characteristics allow these valleys to be protected by natural barriers such as the driest desert in the world at the North, the Andes mountain range at the East, the Pacific Ocean breeze at the West and the Ocean and Patagonian ice fields at the South, making of Chile a phytosanitary island and one of the few countries phylloxera-free.
Chilean red wine, for example, is among the healthiest worldwide according to researchers from Glasgow University who, after testing red wine varieties from more than 12 countries of various climates and from every continent, found that the flavonoids from Chilean red wines (quercetin and myricetin) are significantly higher than other wines analyzed, that is, Chilean wines contain more antioxidants. Researchers visited Chile and established that the cause for this outstanding feature could be the sunny weather and moderate temperatures, allowing a slow and complete ripening of the grape.
Innovative
Chile has a long history of growing vines. Wine has been present in our territory since the arrival of the Spanish conquerors, allowing a broad group of people to carry and pass down the skills of winemaking and working in the vineyard. In recent decades, the Chilean wine industry has incorporated the latest available technologies in order to make significant efforts not only to improve processes, but also the manual labor involved in them.
Vinnova and Tecno Vid were particularly important in this area. Both technological consortia were dependent on Wines of Chile and worked together with wineries, universities and research centers in order to explore and develop production methods that were more environmentally friendly and resulted in improved viticultural and oenological practices.
Sustainable
Sustainability is far more than a catch phrase. It is also much broader than taking an ecologically sound approach to grape growing. It involves close attention to detail in each of the three components required for a healthy company: the environment, the people, and the economic bottom line. In response to an industry-wide concern for each of these areas, Wines of Chile has taken a proactive role in guiding the nation’s wineries toward sustainable practices and has sponsored the development of a National Sustainability Code that establishes definitions and guidelines for environmental and social responsibility.
Wineries that meet with rigorous standards will earn the right to include the official “Accredited Sustainable-Wine of Chile” seal on their labels.

Organic Wines
In the late 1990’s, Chilean vineyards started to note how the consumption patterns of their international clients changed, increasingly more aware of the environmental and social impacts of the foods and beverages they consumed. From then on, Chilean vineyards of all sizes have devoted their efforts to being more environmentally friendly, implementing organic and biodynamic methods in the use of their premises, achieving wines of high-quality, color, flavor and fragrance, an aspect to differentiate them against their competitors.
In Chile there are more than 4 thousand hectares of organic vineyards, and more than 43 vineyards certified with the Sustainability National Code, voluntary program from the Wines of Chile Trade Union Association.
Chilean organic wines have obtained international acknowledgments in contests such as Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Chile 2014; International Organic Wine Awards (Alemania), among others.
-
Worldwide Recognition
With 3.7 percent of the total, Chile stands today as the world’s fourth-largest exporter and is widely recognized for the number of its wineries, and most importantly, for the quality of its products. In recent years Chilean wines have earned numerous accolades at highly prestigious competitions, including the Decanter World Wine Awards, and the recognition of influential trade publications such as Wine Spectator.
Some of the international contests in which Chilean wines have been recognized for their quality: tasting Vinalies Internationales, Mundus Vini, Mondial de Bruxelles, Challenge International du Vin, Citadelles du Vin, Wine International Challenge, Decanter, Japon Wine Challenge e International Wine Spirits.

Diversity
Wine is one of our major ambassadors within international markets. This is one of the products representing the qualities of Chilean exports: quality, safety, geographical diversity and reliability, among others. Not for nothing, each day 16,9 million people throughout the world drink a glass of Chilean wine. The Diversity of soils and varieties make Chile able to offer consumers of the world with wines according to the occasion, place and taste.
-
Soil & Terroir
- With so much geographic variety, the Chilean landscape also offers a vast mosaic of terroirs and soil types.
- Soils are healthy, well-drained, and have a variety of origins (alluvial, colluvial, fluvial, etc.) and textures (loam, clay, sand, silt).
- Despite the relatively dry atmospheric conditions, abundant water for irrigation flows from the eternal ice caps of the Andes Mountains that tower all along Chile’s eastern border.
-
Varieties
From Atacama to Osorno, in Chile there are more than 120,000 hectares planted with wine grapes, which are divided in about 50 varieties. From them, a 75% corresponds to red wine grapes, and a 25% to white wines. The most important are:
