Commercial Relations Chile – China
Eight years ago Chile and China put in place a free trade agreement. Since then, trade between the two countries, with the subsequent tariff advantages associated with the agreement, has not stopped growing, positioning China as the main trading partner of Chile. Ten years ago, Chile exported less than a billion dollars to the Chinese market. In 2013, Chile exported more than US$19 billion.
As of January 1st of this year, Chilean exports included in the FTA were tariff-free, according to the respective tariff reduction schedules. Among the main Chilean goods that will benefit are: fresh grapes, some wines, fish meal, frozen trout, boric acids, salmon, olive oil, and other articles of iron.

Forestry and Wood Industry
In Chile, the forestry sector is an important sector from environmental, social and economic points of view, participating with about 3% of the Gross Domestic Product of the country. The great development of this industry – based in a clear comparative and competitive advantage, mainly in respect to the species Radiata Pine – has resulted in sustained development and wide recognition in the international arena, strengthening the country’s position as a leader of sustainable forest management.
Chile has regions with extensive experience and knowledge of the forestry business. These areas have ideal soil and climate conditions for the planting and harvesting of plantations of Radiata Pine and Eucalyptus spp., fast-growing species that support the development of the Chilean timber industry.
In addition to their renowned quality attributes, in comparison to timber of the same species but produced in other parts of the world, Chilean forest plantations have an additional attribute which is sustainability. Of the 2.3 million hectares planted, 1.6 million hectares of the forests are certified under Sustainable Forest Management seals FSC or Certfor/PEFC (70% of the total); 104 companies have certified the traceability of their products to their origin with Chain of Custody standards and, finally, 84% of planted forests have been planted on bare soils with varying degrees of erosion, so that native forests have not been threatened.
In addition to the activities related to processing or primary production (primary industry), the Chilean forest complex consists of a set of subsectors that make up the so-called High Forest Industry. In this classification more than 200 exporting companies are identified.
