Chile, a reliable supplier of Seafood
Fish farming has developed rapidly over the last thirty years, with strong production and international positioning.
Over the last 20 years Chile has become the second largest producer of salmon in the world – according to information from the Chilean Salmon Association and Rabobank – and the world’s biggest producer of trout. It is also renowned for the quality of its mussels, seaweed, scallops and abalones.
In seafood, Chile is now the world’s biggest exporter of mussels and frozen salmon fillets, the second biggest exporter of agar-agar and frozen swordfish fillets, and third biggest exporter of seaweed.
This international position has been achieved thanks to strict compliance with regulations while ensuring harmony with sustainable production, including the use of fishing quotas and temporary closures. The industry uses systems to monitor products from starting point through to destination. Ongoing research has enabled resources to be diversified and new products created in the framework of a production system which meets the highest international sanitary standards.
This resulted in Chile exporting US$4.6 billion of seafood in 2015 to over 100 countries, equal to 31.3% of Chile’s total food exports that year.
Exports to Hong Kong in 2015 totalled US$33.4 million, while those to China reached US$296.6 million.

Knows the origin of nutritional products
Chile’s geography and its natural barriers mean that it has natural, healthy, flavoursome and aromatic products of global renown. Chile ranks 24th in the world and first in Latin America on the Global Food Security Index for 2016.
Seven seafood companies that focus on foods for human consumption are to showcase their products at Chile’s stand in Hall 5BC, 5-816 of the convention centre. In addition to business meetings, the stand will offer tastings of local dishes made with Chilean products.
Products
Seaweed
On average seaweed contains 20% high-value, easy to digest protein. It is low in sugars and lipids but high in polyunsaturated fats that are beneficial to health. The vitamin content varies between species, but seaweed tends to be high in vitamins C, E, B group and provitamin A.
Salmon
Salmon is low in calories, contains high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA), Omega 6, nutrients and proteins, as well as high concentrations of vitamins A, B6-B3, D and K, plus essential minerals such as selenium, zinc, potassium, iodine and phosphorus.
Mejillones
The excellent conditions in which they are cultivated and processed in southern Chile mean that they are a 100% natural product. During their cultivation period, mussels feed directly from the nutrients in the internal waters of Chiloé, without human intervention. However, they are subject to strict environmental and sanitary controls by the Chilean authorities.
