Chilean Seafood Industry
Long coastline, pure waters and marine resources of high nutritional content are characteristic of Chile. The cold waters of the South Pacific provide abundant resources for industrial fishing and artisanal fishery. The main products are mackerel, sardines, austral hake, Giant Squid, Chilean abalones, urchins, King crab and snow crab, crabs, shrimps, lobsters and yellow squat lobster, among others.
Concerning aquaculture, the main products are salmon, trout, mussels, seaweeds, scallops and abalones, among others, with the salmon and trout category as leader of the Chilean exports of seafood products, reaching 73 countries in the world with exports exceeded US$ 3,400 million in 2015.
Mussels are another important Chilean aquaculture product. They have gained a significant reputation, increasing their market share and entering new international markets. The mussels exported in 2015 reached US$ 202 million, 7% more than in 2014 and got record shipments worldwide.
The foundations of international positioning of Chilean seafood products are also complemented by the strict regulatory industry commitment in harmony with the productive sustainability, quotas and temporary closures, tracking systems from the starting point to the destination, and a constant research that allow increasing the production, diversifying resources and creating new products as part of a production system that meets the highest sanitary standards internationally.

Foods from Chile, source of life
Chile is a country with great natural and human potential located in a place of amazing geographical and climatic contrasts. Chile’s unique characteristics ensure it unrivalled conditions for producing fresh, pure, healthy, and good quality food which is appreciated around the world.
Chile has the most transparent skies on Earth and possesses some of the world’s most significant freshwater reserves. Natural barriers at the four compass points protect Chile, converting it into a true phytosanitary island, thereby reducing the incidence of pests and diseases.
As it is such a long country, Chile has an unusually varied range of climates. One that particularly stands out is the Mediterranean climate, which has enabled Chile to become a major food producer. This climate is especially advantageous for obtaining good quality raw materials and staggered production, which is counter-seasonal to the Northern Hemisphere.
