Chile, a reliable supplier of seafood
- Chile is notable for its long coastline, pure waters and highly nutritious marine resources. The cold waters of the Pacific Ocean furnish abundant resources, such as jack mackerel, sardines, southern hake, pacific pomfret, giant squid, locos, sea urchins, king crab and snow crab, crabs, shrimps, seabass, lobster and prawns, among others.
- Fish farming has developed rapidly over the last thirty years, with strong production and international positioning.
- Over the last 20 years Chile has become the second largest producer of salmon in the world – according to information from the Chilean Salmon Association and Rabobank – and the world’s biggest producer of trout. It is also renowned for the quality of its mussels, seaweed, scallops and abalones.
- This international position has been achieved thanks to strict compliance with regulations while ensuring harmony with sustainable production, including the use of fishing quotas and temporary closures. The industry uses systems to monitor products from starting point through to destination. Ongoing research has enabled resources to be diversified and new products created in the framework of a production system which meets the highest international sanitary standards.
- This resulted in Chile exporting US$4.6 billion of seafood in 2015 to over 100 countries, equal to 31.3% of Chile’s total food exports that year.
- 76% of total seafood exports in 2015 were salmon and trout, followed by mussels with 4.4%, fish oil with 3%, jack mackerel with 2.3%, seaweed with 2.1% and others.

Free Trade Agreement between Chile and the USA
With 25 free trade agreements signed with 64 markets, Chile currently has free access to 64.1% of the world’s population, corresponding to 86.3% of global GDP. These include the agreement signed with the USA on June 6, 2003, which came into effect on January 1, 2004.
From 1 January 2015, all bilateral trade has been liberalized, as the tariff reduction program has been completed.
For more than a decade, Chile and the USA have maintained excellent relations and this can be seen in the joint work to implement and modernize the treaty, adapting it to the circumstances and requirements of the trading ties between the two countries.
Chilean seafood exports to the USA have intensified in recent years as a result of this treaty. In 2013, it overtook Japan as the main destination for these Chilean goods. This leadership was confirmed in 2014 and 2015, with exports to the US market in excess of US$1.5 and US$ 1.3 billion, respectively. Last year, the main seafood products shipped to the USA by Chile included salmon and trout, seabass, mussels and fish oil, among others.

Despite the decrease registered in 2015, salmon and trout remain the main seafood products exported by Chile to the USA.
This position has been achieved thanks to hard work by both the public and private sectors, whose primary concern is to provide a product of recognized quality and innocuity.
Our salmon are born in the southern channels of Chile, which have the cleanest waters on Earth, and arrive in the USA after complying with the highest international standards.
The Government of Chile has been particularly concerned to secure the health and innocuity of salmon, regularly inspecting the processing companies, who have been required to invest in the latest technology and deliver a product of the highest quality in nutritional and sanitary terms.
Salmon innocuity control programs ensure that this product can be exported to even the most demanding markets in the world. And these exports have a direct impact on the social and economic development of southern Chile.
