Berlinale 2016
The world’s film industry will come together February 11th-21st for a new edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.
After the triumphs of Pablo Larraín’s “El Club (The Club)” (Grand Jury Prize, 2015), “El botón de nácar (The Pearl Button)” by Patricio Guzmán (Best Screenplay, 2015), and Sebastián Lelio’s “Gloria” (Best Actress, 2013), this year Chile will be represented by four feature films in two official sections of the festival.
“Aquí no ha pasado nada (Much Ado About Nothing)” by Alejandro Fernández Almendras, who won at the 2014 Sundance Festival with the film “Matar a un hombre (To Kill A Man),” will compete in the Panorama section along with “Nunca vas a estar solo (You’ll Never Be Alone)” by director Alex Anwandter. Anwandter has won two post-production awards at the Guadalajara Festival in Mexico.
Debut films by Pepa San Martín (“Rara”) and Roberto Doveris (“Las plantas [The Plants]”) will compete in the Generation section, which features pieces by a generation of new directors who are positioning themselves with increasing success on the international stage. Pepa San Martín is returning to the Berlinale after winning the DAAD Prize in 2011 with her short “La ducha (The Shower),” which allowed her to complete a residency in Berlin.

The Chilean audiovisual sector
Chile’s cinematographic achievements have been increasing over the past few years. In January 2013, the film “No” became the first Chilean film to be nominated for an Oscar. This year, the animated short “Bear Story” received a nomination for an Academy Award as well. In addition, Maite Alberdi’s “La once (Tea Time)” was selected for the “Best Foreign Film” category in the Goya Awards. In the past, that prize has gone to the Chilean films “La buena vida (The Good Life)” (2009) and “La vida de los peces (The Life of Fish)” (2011).
Meanwhile, at the Berlinale, “La ducha (The Shower)” was awarded the DAAD Short Film Prize in 2011, which came in addition to the three Silver Bears that Chile took for “Gloria” (2013), “El Club (The Club),” and “El botón de nácar (The Pearl Button)” (both 2015).
Chilean cinema has a presence in the main festivals and markets of documentary and fiction film, short films, animation, and TV in Chile and around the world under the brand CinemaChile. This public-private initiative is led by the country’s Film and Television Producers Association in collaboration with ProChile, Chile’s Export Promotion Bureau. The goal is to position the Chilean audiovisual sector as an industry that offers quality films as well as talented writers, actors, directors, producers, musicians, and writers with a great capacity to work and the ability to create unique and surprising stories. These characteristics inserted in a competitive, transparent, and stable socio-economic system like the Chilean one guarantee the swift and effective internationalization of its services, products, and talents.
