Prowein 2016: Chile consolidates its position in the world and successfully introduces sparkling wine
Chile is currently attending the 2016 edition of Prowein with wineries representing all of the varieties being grown in Chile, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as a selection of sparkling wines, which have gained an excellent reputation in the world because of new consumption trends.
Between 13 and 15 March, Düsseldorf will be the setting for showing once more why Chilean still and sparkling wines lead the New World and compete in terms of both quality and price with those produced right around the world.
“Chile continues to be positioned as the fourth biggest wine exporter in the world, after France, Spain and Italy and it is the biggest in the New World. Our bottled wine exports remained stable in 2015, reaching US$1.5 billion in exports, and red wine achieved a new record level of exports at US$1 billion. This means our wine industry remains a world favourite and Prowein offers an excellent platform for us to continue to grow,” highlighted Chile’s Ambassador to Germany, Mariano Fernández.
ProChile’s Trade Attaché in Germany, Bettina Stengel, highlighted the high number of wineries attending this fair, showing that invitation had been a success. She added that this trade fair is part of Chile’s efforts and its international food promotion campaign “Foods from Chile, Source of Life” to position the country as a reliable supplier of quality food products.
“Every day the world enjoys Chilean products, especially wine. We are a country with unique characteristics for producing food and we are also making great efforts to achieve organic and sustainable production. At Prowein we have a wide variety of wineries that meet these requirements and moreover we have highlighted the Chilean wine industry’s sustainability code, to make our visitors aware of the commitment by Chile and its wine industry,” explained the Trade Attaché.
Sparkling wine is another product of the Chilean wine industry that has been drawing attention in recent years. In fact, according to figures from ProChile based on Chile’s Central Bank statistics, Chilean sparkling wine exports grew by 3% between 2014 and 2015.
“Sparkling wine is one of the new global consumption trends and Chile is not lagging behind. In 2015, sparkling wine exports reached US$17.8 million and most Chilean wineries are producing sparkling wines that compete with the best in the world,” said the Managing Director of Wines of Chile, Claudio Cilveti.
Wines of Chile held a seminar for visitors to the fair. Peter Richards, Master of Wine and a renowned UK wine expert, led a guided tasting of the wines that won the 13th edition of the Wines of Chile Awards, which took place in Shanghai. The tasting also included a sparkling wine which won an award in the competition.
